At the Range

Range qualifications (in most cases) will be held at:

Marksman Indoor Range
507 Nebraska St.
South Houston, TX 77587

At the Range

You must use a handgun of at least .32 caliber. Semi-automatic or revolver.

You may qualify with a revolver or a semi automatic and you may carry either one.

Make sure you are familiar with your handgun.

All handguns should be in good repair and have no modifications that would make the weapon less safe.
(Please make sure your weapon is working properly and will operate without malfunction prior to the class)

When entering the range all weapons must be UNLOADED and should be in a bag or other type of container. All magazines should be empty and the weapon's slide locked open. An accidental discharge while loading, unloading or handling your weapon may be grounds for not receiving proficiency certification.

You must know and abide by the Range Rules.

What to Bring

One handgun .32 caliber or above (clean and in good working condition)

(all handguns will be inspected by Instructor)

50 rounds of ammunition (minimum) ( more needed if you fail to qualify on first try)
NO RELOADS PLEASE**.

The range requires Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) / Brass Casings
(Ammunition is available for purchase at the range if needed)

Hearing protection - muff type (the range will provide this if you do not have your own).
Eye protection (the range will provide this if you do not have your own).

If you wear prescription glasses, that will work but they need to cover the entire eye.

You might want to wear protective eye wear over your glasses to keep them from getting dusty and scratched.

Head cover - a brimmed cap or hat that will cover the head and the area toward the face (such as a baseball cap)..

Closed toed shoes and socks (absolutely no sandals or open toed shoes of any kind).

Should Bring

Hand towel (for those sweaty palms, etc.)

Bottle of water (sometime range is warm, dry mouth, etc.)

NOTE: Brass shell casing exiting your handgun are HOT. Please wear clothing that will not permit the brass shell casings to lodge in your clothing or land on exposed skin. Long pants and collared shirt are recommended.

Scoring

Scoring shots is a simple matter of counting the number of rounds or "hits" on the target and assessing each with a point value.

·  Hits within the 8 ring are 5 points.

·  Hits within the 7 ring and outside the 8 ring are 4 points.

·  Hits outside the 7 ring and still on the silhouette are 3 points.

·  Hits in the white area are 0 points.

Specifics to scoring:
·  If a hit "cuts" the line it is considered to be the next highest point range.
·  If a hit cuts the silhouette it is considered to be 3 points.
·  If multiple hits are obviously in the same area and in a scorable point range, it is
assumed that all 50 rounds have been accounted for and unaccounted rounds are
   assessed at 5 points each.

The course of fire is as follows:

3 yards, 20 rounds

  • 1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
  • 2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
  • 5 shots in 10 seconds, 1 time

7 yards, 20 rounds

  • 5 shots in 10 seconds, 1 time
  • 2 shots in 4 seconds, 1 time
  • 3 shots in 6 seconds, 1 time
  • 1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
  • 5 shots in 15 seconds, 1 time

15 yards, 10 rounds

  • 2 shots in 6 seconds, 1 time
  • 3 shots in 9 seconds, 1 time
  • 5 shots in 15 seconds, 1 time

Rounds may not be fired in the above order.

You will fire as directed by the instructor. You must follow the commands.

Any unsafe behavior will likely result in disqualification

A total of 50 rounds are fired during range qualifications. Of a possible score of 250 points, 175 (70%) is required to pass.

A B-27 target will be used for range qualifications.

** The failure rate is greater when using reloads versus factory ammunition during qualification. You do not want to risk failing to qualify on cheaper ammunition. The ammunition you use should meet SAAMI* Specification.
