Notice
As of March 1, 2011 the TXDPS will no longer allow
CHL instructors to provide fingerprinting service. This means that the
“one-day, one-stop” CHL classes will no longer be possible after that time.
Initial applicants for CHL will have to go to IdentoGO Centers (formerly L-1 Enrollment Services) operated by MorphoTrust USA in order
to get your fingerprints. While this is an additional step it is not that bad.
It is fairly painless compared to what you may be hearing from some places.
There are several locations in or around Houston. Most of you will set your appointment up through
the state website, there will be no waiting in line for hours.
Concealed Handgun Classes
CHL Original-Issue
This course is a state requirement when applying for a
Texas Concealed Handgun License. Texas requires a minimum of four and a limit of
6 hours of training for an original-issue license. these required hours DO NOT include the written test or range proficiency. The Concealed Handgun
License class deals mainly with the laws and responsibilities involved in
concealed carry. The shooting portion of the class is a qualification only. You
will be expected to know how to operate your handgun safely and accurately. Any
unsafe behavior will likely result in disqualification and removal from class.

with the state to attend the CHL Class.

There
will be a 25 question test at the end of the class covering the material in
class. You must score 70% to pass. You will pass this class with no problem if
you pay attention in class. If you fail the
test we will go over the material and test you again.
The actual lessons may not be taught in the order listed above.

CHL Renewal
As of September 1, 2013
The requirements for Texas CHL holders to complete a renewal course or demonstrate proficiency to renew the license are no longer needed.
Texas CHL holders will have the option to submit their renewal application online.
Texas CHL holders may renew for up to one year after expiration.
REMEMBER:
There is no grace period for continuing to carry, once the CHL has expired.
Handgun Proficiency (Range)
The shooting qualification will consist of
the following course of fire.
20 rounds fired at 3 yards (9 feet)
20 rounds fired at 7 yards (21 feet) and
10 rounds fired at 15 yards (45 feet).
You will fire as directed by the instructor.You must follow the commands.

You must score 70% to pass, a 175 out of the
possible 250 points using a B-27 target. Most students qualify well before
shooting at 15 yards. If you fail this part, work will be done with you one on
one at another time to correct any problems so you can qualify.
You should bring your own eyes and or ears
protection. Both must be worn while in the range.They will be supplied by the
range if needed.
Upon
successful completion of these courses you will receive a Certificate of
Training (CHL-100) which is required by the DPS as part of your application for
a Concealed Handgun License
The CHL classes are not
designed to teach you how to shoot. If you are a new shooter, I recommend
taking my Pre-CHL Private Lesson class first. Students who attend my Pre-CHL Private Lesson class and then attend my CHL class will receive a $20 discount for
their CHL class (only $65 after discount). Private shooting lessons are
available if you:
● Have never fired a gun.
● Have purchased a new gun.
● Want to improve proficiency or comfort level.

Pre-CHL Private Lesson
This
course includes 1 1/2 hours of classroom and 1 1/2 hours of gun range practice
in preparation for the CHL gun range qualification. Three hours of training, including firearm
safety, basic shooting skills, and mock CHL qualification.
Classroom
training includes a safety briefing, proper gun handling, ammunition loading
and unloading, ballistics, stance, and dry firing of your gun. Gun range
training includes a safety briefing, gun handling, ammunition loading and
unloading, miss-fire clearing, grip, aim, stance, and live gun fire.

Private Shooting Lesson (per hour)
Covers classroom and range training, including firearm safety, basic shooting skills, and mock CHL qualification, if desired. We'll work on the specific skills the student needs or desires.

Private On-Demand CHL Classes
These
can be conducted at your office, home or community center either as a one day
class, or over two evenings. Dates are available for your convenience. This is
a great way to obtain your CHL with a small group and not have to wait for a
regularly scheduled class. We can either shoot the same day or schedule the
handgun qualification at another time.

Build your own class
If
you provide a group of 10, you and 9 others, the class is free for you (for
